In June of 1996, a town meeting was called to discuss the possibility,
pros, and cons of lighting up Oklahoma Park with Christmas displays to
take place every year during the Christmas season.
Eddie Binyon, the founding sponsor of "The Festival of Light" in
Chickasha, Oklahoma, was brought in as an "expert" to answer questions
and discuss the matter. He brought photos and film to be viewed and by
the end of the query, it was unanimous!
That was the night Kingfisher In Lights, Inc.
became a 501 (c)3 corporation. They elected officers and proceeded with
plans for the first Festival of Lights in Kingfisher. We had an
outstanding turn-out that first year asking only for volunteers and
donations. Years later, we are going strong, with lights totaling
145,560 in 1996 to 2 Million lights in 2004!
Citizens and businesses find the help in setting up their displays to
be extraordinary and they are encouraged and welcomed to submit a
display. Those who can't find themselves swept up in the excitement of
volunteering and still others are overwhelmed by the beauty on opening
night and every night through the season.
